Removal of Petroleum from Aquatic Environments such as Sea, Lake, River

Petroleum or crude oil is one of the most common pollutants released into aquatic environments. Natural oil spills, extraction and transport are the main sources of marine crude oil. Some compounds of this pollutant are thought to have carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic effects in aquatic animals and humans.

The aim of this project is to develop biosynthesised iron nanoparticles as iron source instead of ferric chemical reagent to produce magnetic bio-complexes for oil removal from water. Adsorption parameters such as contact time and maximum adsorption capacity were investigated.

What is our solution?

Sunflower stalk coated with bicticially synthesised FeNPs particles. In this way, the oil absorption rate was measured as 87% mg/g. The material is suitable for reuse.

This green adsorbent we developed is economical and environmentally friendly, and also has excellent absorption performance of oil from water. In addition, FeNPs particles can be easily separated from the solution by magnetic separation. The material can be used many times, making it a cheap alternative.

In this solution, unlike other methods, our absorbent cannot be called "biochar" because Fe-CSS is not treated with a pyrolysis furnace. It would provide an advantage for the application of Fe-CSS to marine ecosystems because it can be easily collected from natural ecosystems.
